A Dream Home for Rare Disease Families

The year 2009 marks the 10th anniversary of Taiwan Foundation for Rare Disorders (TFRD). At the time, the founders, Ms. Serena Wu and Prof. Min-Chien Tseng, were pondering and discussing the contents of anniversary publication. “TFRD is about to enter the 2nd decade, and we have to formulate new vision and objectives that are forward-looking.” Rich in experience fulfilled by years of serving rare disease families, TFRD is well aware that aside from medical needs most families are under great physical and mental stress. They have to find ways to get relieved and strengthen their will to face difficulties posed by diseases. Rare disease families, like regular families, wish to lead a normal life as much as possible and get involved in social events. In turn, TFRD is to set up a service center that offers thorough and extensive programs.

After a few years of search and evaluation, TFRD has found a farmland of 4.6 acres located 70-minute drive south of Taipei in Hsinchu. We are to establish the Welfare Home, a fully integrated service center tailor-made for rare disease families. The center is to provide various programs that release patients and caregivers from their daily routine. They can relax, participate in activities and interact with one another. Also TFRD is to offer innovative programs on site such as psychological counseling, rehabilitation, farming, horticultural therapy, baking and cooking, social education, etc. All is to let rare disease families store up some energy and courage to confront the trials of life.

The construction of Welfare Home is scheduled to start in 2020 and complete in 2022. TFRD looks forward to your support and assistance. Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact us. Thank you.
